How to Use a Multi-FX Pedal in Your Amp's Effects Loop

You have already put real money into a pedalboard you built one piece at a time, and it sounds good, and you know it sounds good. But there is still that voice in the back of your head saying just one more, just one more, and you can never quite land on what the missing pedal actually is. Another delay? A reverb with a longer tail? A boost that shoves the solo forward a little harder? The trouble with chasing that feeling is that the answer keeps changing every few months, and the board just keeps getting wider.

So try a different move. Instead of one more single-purpose box, add one that covers all of those and becomes whichever one the song needs. Positive Grid’s Spark PEDAL can work that way in a rig you already own, and here is how to set it up.

Where it goes in the signal path

If your amp has an effects loop, that is usually the best home for it. Anything plugged into the front of the amp hits the preamp before the preamp does its thing, which is exactly what you want for drive, fuzz, and wah, since those should be interacting with the gain. Time-based effects are a different story, because delay repeats and reverb tails that pass through the preamp get pushed through all that distortion along with your note, and you end up with a smeared version of the parts you were hoping would sound biggest.

Run a cable from your amp’s effects send into the input on Spark PEDAL, then take its line output back into the amp’s effects return. There are two line outputs on the back, so use the L/Mono jack for a standard mono loop and keep the second one in your pocket for the day your setup goes stereo. If your amp has no loop, nothing is lost. Put it on the board with everything else and run it into the front of the amp.

The one setting you cannot skip

Whichever way you connect it, make sure to switch off the cab sim. Your amp’s power section and speaker are already doing that job, and leaving cab sim on stacks two cabinets on top of each other, which sounds exactly as muddy as it sounds. This is the single most common thing people get wrong when they put an amp and effects pedal in front of a real amp, and it takes about four seconds to fix.

While you are in there, get your levels and EQ sitting properly. If your amp has a send or return level control, start it low and bring it up until the loop is not squashing your signal. It is also worth poking around the app for a few minutes before you commit to anything, because the next part lives entirely in there.

Turn each preset into a single pedal

This is the part that actually solves the just-one-more problem, and it is not obvious until someone shows you.

Spark PEDAL has six customizable presets across two banks. Most people treat a preset as a full rig, which is the right instinct when you are playing through it on its own. But when you are running it inside a rig you already like, the smarter move is to treat each preset as one pedal instead.

Build a preset in the app, then strip out everything in the signal chain you do not need for that one job. Swipe up on the amp to switch it off since your real amp is already covering that, and swipe up on anything else that is not the effect you are after. What you are left with is a preset that does exactly one thing, which means it behaves like a single stompbox rather than a whole setup.

Do that six times and give each slot a job. Preset one is your overdrive. Preset two is your delay. Preset three is your tremolo. Keep going through chorus, phaser, a longer modulated reverb, whatever your songs actually call for. There is a deep library to pull from, so the six you land on can be six things you genuinely use rather than six compromises.

Then assign those presets to the footswitches, and that is the whole trick. You now have one enclosure on your board that is an overdrive during the verse, a tremolo on the bridge, and a delay under the solo, and it morphs into whichever one the song asks for without you buying another pedal to get there.

What this actually changes about your board

The obvious win is space, and it is a real one. Six pedals worth of jobs in one footprint, plus a tuner built in, is a lot of room back on a board that was already full.

The less obvious win is that your board stops being locked in. Every pedal you own does one thing forever, which is fine until the new song needs a tremolo you do not have. Instead of ordering something and waiting a week, you rebuild a preset in the app in a couple of minutes and it is ready for rehearsal that night. It is one of those small changes that ends up mattering more thn it should, mostly because it takes the pressure off the whole question of what to buy next.
