Spark CAB 2: What's New and Who It's For

Spark CAB 2: What's New and Who It's For

Maybe you've got a Spark CAB already. Maybe you've had your eye on one and just noticed there's a Spark CAB 2. Either way, here's the short answer up front. Positive Grid's Spark CAB 2 keeps the 140 watts of full-range power Spark CAB players count on and gives it a new voice, re-tuned for a tighter, more defined low end. It also picks up a USB-C port for firmware updates and a look made to match Spark 2. And if you already own the original, there's an upgrade price waiting for you when you sign in.

Whether Spark CAB 2 is the right cab for you depends on how and what you play, so let's go through it honestly.

Spark CAB vs. Spark CAB 2: What's New

The upgrades land in three places: the voicing, the firmware port and the finish. Underneath, Spark CAB 2 keeps the 140 watts of full-range power and every input and switch you'd expect from a Spark CAB, so nothing you rely on goes away.

The New Voice: A Tighter Low End

The biggest change is one you hear rather than see. Spark CAB 2's acoustics have been re-tuned so the low end comes through tighter and more defined, with more detail and clarity across the range. The idea is a bottom end that stays composed as you turn up, so your low notes keep their shape instead of spreading out into the room.

It's the same power underneath. What's different is how that power is voiced.

Firmware Updates Over USB-C

Spark CAB 2 has a USB-C port that handles firmware updates, with an LED status light so you can see what's going on while it updates. That means the cab can be updated over time rather than staying exactly as it shipped. It's the same port that charges Spark GO, Spark MINI and Spark PEDAL, so it pulls double duty on a crowded floor.

Made to Match Spark 2

The original Spark CAB was dressed to sit with Spark 40, GO and MINI. Spark CAB 2 comes in Black or Pearl with gold trim, designed to pair with Spark 2, so if that's your amp, your stack looks like one rig. If you're into the details of that look, Spark 2 Design: A Closer Look covers where it comes from.

Both finishes use the same cabinet and sound identical, so pick the one you like looking at. The DC adapter for Spark 2 is in the box, which means one wall outlet runs your whole stack.

Who Spark CAB 2 Is For

If you play Spark 2 (or you're about to) and want your stack to match, with a cab designed to pair with it, Spark CAB 2 is the one. This is the situation it was made for.

If you push your rig hard and want the low end tighter and more defined at volume, that's a yes too. That re-tune is the one change you'll hear from the first chord.

If you like the idea of a cab that keeps getting firmware updates, Spark CAB 2 is the one that can.

If you're in the market and just found out there are two Spark CABs, here's the whole decision in a sentence. You get 140 watts of full-range power either way, and Spark CAB 2 adds the re-tuned voice, firmware updates and the Spark 2 look on top. If any of those matter to you, Spark CAB 2 is the one to hear first.

Already Own a Spark CAB? Keep Playing It

Upgrade or not, your original Spark CAB still works with Spark 2 through the Spark Input, and its combo inputs still take your modelers and pedals. It's the same cab that's been holding down shows for players since day one, and plenty of owners who upgrade will keep it set up in another room so there's always a rig ready to go.

Spark CAB 2 FAQ

Is Spark CAB 2 louder than the original Spark CAB? No. It has the same 140 watts as the original. The difference is in the voicing, not the volume.

Does Spark CAB 2 work with every Spark? It works with every current Spark amp, including Spark GO, Spark MINI, Spark PEDAL, Spark 40 and Spark 2, through the 3.5mm Spark Input and the included stereo cable. Your Spark amp's speaker mutes by default. The DC output powers Spark 2 (with the included adapter) or Spark 40, and the USB-C port charges Spark GO, Spark MINI and Spark PEDAL. Please note that it doesn't power Spark EDGE or Spark LIVE.

Do both finishes sound the same? Yes. Black and Pearl share the same cabinet and the same sound.

Can I still use my original Spark CAB with Spark 2? Yes, through the Spark Input.
